The Papa isn't really a great fan of the sixties, however he definitely admits there was some truly cool and wacky shit going on then. Any period that can bring you surfing, monsters and hot rods all in the same breath had got to be good, and lets not forget Maynard G Krebs!!
The sixties was also a prolific period for remembering WWII and truck loads of war movies were made during this period, typically starring the likes of Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson, Ernest Borgnine, Lee Marvin and other Hollywood tough guys, maybe America needed to be reminded of its former glory who knows? This fascination seemed to stretch up from the beaches of Southern LA to the famous intersections of Hollywood and Vine. But it was also apparent in the comic kingdom, DC and Marvel came up with some amazing characters and the Papa just wanted to take a moment here to share with you some of his favourite cover art of these WWII comics.
Capt. Savage and his Leatherneck Raiders had got it all!! Marines storming the beaches with Tommy guns and surfboards it doesn't get any better than this.
Captain Storm was the PT boat skipper with a wooden leg that confronted the Imperial Japanese Navy armed only with a bazooka, go get 'em Capt'n!
How's Johnny Cloud? Johnny was the Navajo fighter ace from the reservations who in this cover has parachuted onto the tail section of a Messerschmitt and is having a hand gun battle with the Kraut pilot!
The Nips need to learn they can't shoot the Captain in his wooden leg and stop him, he's hell bent on revenging Pearl Harbor!
